They take out their red pen and circle your table. They write one word: <strong>&#8220;Messy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because you copy-pasted a screenshot from SPSS directly into Microsoft Word. Or maybe you drew a table that looks like a prison cell\u2014covered in thick black gridlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In academic writing, <strong>how<\/strong> you present your data is just as important as the data itself. A thesis is a professional document, not an Excel spreadsheet. If your tables are ugly, hard to read, or inconsistently formatted, the examiner assumes you are careless. All abbreviations (e.g., &#8220;SD = Standard Deviation&#8221;) must be defined in a <strong>Note<\/strong> at the bottom of the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The &#8220;No Vertical Lines&#8221; Rule (The APA Commandment)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the number one mistake Malaysian students make. In primary school, we learned that a table is a grid. It has lines everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In Academic Writing (APA Style), vertical lines are forbidden.<\/strong> Vertical lines stop the eye from scanning across the row. They create &#8220;visual clutter.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The 3-Line Rule:<\/strong> A professional academic table usually only has <strong>3 horizontal lines<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Top Line:<\/strong> Above the headings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Middle Line:<\/strong> Below the headings (separating headers from data).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bottom Line:<\/strong> At the very end of the table.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Inside the table:<\/em> No lines. A little white space at the bottom of the previous page is okay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The &#8220;(Continued)&#8221; Rule:<\/strong> If it <em>must<\/em> span two pages:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Repeat the <strong>Column Headings<\/strong> on the second page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a title row on the second page: <strong>&#8220;Table 4.2 (Continued)&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Word Tip:<\/em> Highlight the header row -> Right Click -> Table Properties -> Row -> Check &#8220;Repeat as header row at the top of each page.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Software Specifics: SPSS and SmartPLS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discussed this in the &#8220;Errors&#8221; post, but it bears repeating for visual standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SPSS Output<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never copy-paste.<\/strong> SPSS tables are ugly. They use Arial Narrow font (usually). They have grey backgrounds. They have vertical lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Standard:<\/strong> You must <strong>re-type<\/strong> the data into a Word Table. Yes, it is tedious. Yes, you must do it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Shortcut:<\/strong> In SPSS, you can look for &#8220;APA Style&#8221; scripts, but honestly, re-typing is safer to ensure you only include relevant columns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SmartPLS \/ AMOS Figures<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never use a screenshot.<\/strong> Screenshots get pixelated (blurry) when printed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Standard:<\/strong> Export the image as a high-resolution file.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>SmartPLS:<\/em> Right-click the diagram -> Export as Image -> Select <strong>.PNG<\/strong> or <strong>.SVG<\/strong>. It won&#8217;t fit vertically (Portrait).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Solution:<\/strong> Use a <strong>Section Break<\/strong> to turn just <em>that one page<\/em> into <strong>Landscape<\/strong> (sideways).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Word:<\/em> Layout -> Breaks -> Section Break (Next Page). Then change Orientation to Landscape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Catch:<\/em> The page number must still be in the &#8220;Portrait&#8221; position (top right or bottom center of the short edge). This is a formatting nightmare in Word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Workaround:<\/em> Most Malaysian IPS (Institute of Postgraduate Studies) manuals allow the page number to be &#8220;sideways&#8221; on landscape pages. Can I read the path coefficients?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reference:<\/strong> Did I mention the table in the text <em>before<\/em> showing it? (e.g., &#8220;As shown in Table 4.1&#8230;&#8221;).
